The vertical jump is a test of maximum muscular power (High-Speed Strength). This is related to the ability of muscle tissues to exert high force while contracting at a high speed, requiring an explosive action.
Set Up:
To conduct this test you can do it in one of two ways depending on the equipment available.
(1) a wall or (2) a Vertec device
You will need a clear space, some chalk to mark the jump and a measuing tape.
Procedure:
(1)
The tester should rub chalk on the participants fingertips on their dominant hand.
While standing flat footed the participant should reach as high as they can with their dominant hand and make a mark on the wall.
The participant then lowers their dominant hand then without any form of step they perform a counter movement before jumping and reach as high as possible they look to make a new marl on the wall.
(2)
The inital height is set depending on how high the participant can reach while standing flat footed.
The next steps how to perform the jump and how it is measured is the same compared to when using the wall (as stated above).
The participant performs three times with the best score being taken.
