2 vs 1 Centre Pass

Set up a 3m x 3m area, with an Attacker  and a Defender inside. A Feeder stands outside the area and starts with the ball. A second Defender is positioned in between the Feeder and the area. You can set this up in the context of the court with the Feeder starting on the Centre circle and the box being in a shooting third. The feeder tosses the ball up to themselves to start the drill and turns to face the attacker. The attacker's aim is to come over the front line to recieve the ball, getting free from the defender. 

Getting free

Getting free for a Centre Pass

The purpose of this drill is to encourage Attackers to get into a position near to the transverse line when receiving a Centre pass. Set up 6 cones, beginning with 2 close to the middle and near the transverse line and then 2 more pairs of cones moving out and further away. The nearer cones are worth 3 points and as they get further away this decreases to 2pt and then 1pt. Aim is for the Attacker to get free and move into the centre third ready to receive a Centre pass. Attacker shouls look to shiftt he defender's bodyweight enough to reach the cone without being tagged by the Defender.

Jumping Intercept 2

Player 1 has the ball. The middle player takes two steps forward to receive a high ball from player 1. He feeds the ball back to player 1 and then moves to the line as player 1 passes to player 2. The middle player moves back to intercept a pass from player 2 to player 1.

Pass and Cut with Trigger

Set up: No set amount of people needed. Working in partners. 2 groups opposite each other. Two players drive out on and angle. One player receives a pass from the same line they have left. Receiver to pass back to partner who has driven out also. First receiver drives long and diagonal across court to receive a long pass from their partner then delivers it back to the line. Introduce trigger once players have mastered the above movement. Trigger – called by a nominated player to change the space. Same drill as above but to the opposite side of the court. When 'trigger' is called players aim to adapt to the other side of the court as quickly as possible. 'Trigger' player to initiate play and be passing/receiver option.

Pass and Switch

Set up: 2 balls a third court space 8+ players 4 lines, 2 facing eachother. 2 players (workers) from front of the lines swith no ball, drive straight to receive a flat pass from the line directly opposite. Ball is passed back and working player changes angle to receive a lob over top. Working player turns and passes ball back to the line they started in then diagonally cuts across to the opposite line Worker drives onto ball and receives a flat pass from the receiver of previous pass. Worker passes to the line diagonally opposite from where they started.

Pivot catch and pass

In this relay the player running out to catch the ball turns in the air to land on the back foot and pass the ball back to the line of players they have ran from with the next step.

Footwork

Quick Decisions - Jump and Land

Split your players into two groups and get them to pair up. The first pair in the line set off and must first choose a hoop to jump and land into - it must not be the same as other player. Both then run to the cone in the middle before then changing direction and choosing the next hoop. Where they jump and land again. They cannot go to the same hoop as the other player, nor can they go back to the same hoop as last time. Repeat this one last time. Coach or feeder can send in ball at final hoop for a one-two pass. Return to the line by jogging around the outside of the court.

Timing the Lead

Set up a square of players, 5m x 5m, numbered 1-4 as shown. A player each from 2 and 3 runs forward. They both look right to receive the passes from 1 and 4 (1 passes to 2, 4 passes to 3). The 2 and 3 players with the ball then pass forward to the line they are running towards, and join the end of that line. The players from 2 and 3 who have caught the balls then become the passers for the other diagonal players (from 1 and 4) to run. 20 passes each looking right 20 passes each looking left (3 gets the ball from 1, 2 gets the ball from 4)

Truck and Trailer

Set up: Players set up in 4 corners 8+ players 2 balls in diagonally opposite corners Players without the balls and at the front of diagonally oppsite lines are the workers. Workers drive out and receive a pass from their left. Worker turns and passes back to the line they came from. Workers then drives back towards the line they came from to receive a short 'anywhere' pass (drop, high, bounce). Worker then drives to their left to receive a long over head ball and passes to the line they were driving towards. Passer sends a long flat ball to worker who then finishes off with a pass to the opposite line they originally started from.

WA and GA coordinating Centre Pass

Set up a big square 9m x 9m, split into four 3m x 3m squares. It can be put into the context of court by positioning it just inside the shooting third. Position 2 attackers and 2 defenders as shown in diagram. A feeder starts outside of the squares with the ball. There is another defender in between the feeder and the square. This drill looks to progress a Centre pass from the 1st phase (receipt of the 1st pass) to the 2nd phase (passing options from the 1st phase). One of the attackers has to receive 1st pass over the front line, as they would in a game situation. The attackers then look to 2nd phase option: the second pass that looks to move the ball into the attacking third.

Sometimes the ball is delivered near a line. These drills can help with ball handling skills and balance.1. In partners, one feeding one working. Worker is to stay stationary and receive passes from the feeder in an arching movement. Worker is to stretch to reach the ball and extend as far as they can.2. Partners work along the baseline. Worker to have one foot on the line. Passer to deliver a ball outside of the court, worker to recive the ball whilst stay inside the court. 3. Worker runs along base line and recives a pass on the go. Passer delivers the pass just outside the court. Worker to recieve the ball at a stretch and pass back to feeder.

Set up: Five cones set up as a square with one cone in the center, 1 ball, 4-6 players.Two feeding players are set up in between cones in line with the center cone.Two attacking players start on the centre cone and choose a corner cone to drive out to, each driving to opposite cones.Attackers time their drive so they receive their pass on the centre cone.Attackers are to create a ‘bow’ shape by driving to the outer cones one at a time and receiving a pass on the middle cone between each drive.

Divide your players into two equal lines, with one ball with the first player. Two feeders stand in the middle on either side of the two lines. The first player passes to the feeder on their left and then runs out to receive the return pass. They catch the ball and then pass to the next player in the opposite line before joining the back of that line. Drill continues.

Train Your Brain Group practic...

Set up in 2 lines facing each other. 2 working players out of the lines back to back facing the line they have come from and with a ball each. Working players pass back to their lines then run behind the front player in the line (one with the ball). They are then to drive on a digonal to the middle of the 2 lines and receive a pass. Working players are now facing each other with a ball each and pass with left hands to each other receiving the opposite ball.Players then pass a high ball to their right (the line they have come from) and drive to the left (other players line) to intercept the other ball before it reaches the line. Players to join the back of the line and a new working pair to start in the middle.

One will get a pass from the feeder. They will then peel out and drive towards the midline to recieve a long pass.Progression 4: As with progression 3 but with one defender in the mix. Progression 5: Backline pass. One worker to fake a drive. Another to pop out to recive a pass from feeder at backline. Another worker to drive foward and recieve pass to the finish with the first fake driver recieving a pass over the halfway line.

Players stand in 2 lines, with a feeder in front of each line. Players pass the ball out to their feeder and then swap sides (going in front or behind the other passing player) to receive the return pass from the other feeder. Players receive the pass from the feeder and then pass to the next players for them to go again.

Delivering the ball midcourt through to the circle edge/shootersSet up: Half court, two balls, 5+ players1 player standing on base line, another player with the ball standing around the third line. Description:Note: The video shows the drill being played out with 2 groups of players, you could just focus on one group i.e. 1 line, 1 V driver. The description is based on one group. Player on base line near shooting post, V drives towards court edge and receives a pass from the player in the line with the ball. Player who passes the ball drives directly to the circle edge in a straight line and receives a pass from the player who has driven out on the V. Player who had initially drove out now drives into a position under the hoop to receive a pass from their player and put a shot up.

Setup: Choose 1 player to be the catcher - they start standing on the line between 2 thirds, wearing a bib. All other players start spread along the goal line facing the catcher. <hr /> Game: The aim is for all the other players to run and get past the catcher into the end zone without being caught - the last player still active is the winner. The catcher must try and catch as many players as possible before they reach the end zone. <hr /> Rules: If a player is caught by the catcher they then become a catcher and start this role on the line for the next run back. Players must not go outside of the blue coned area. Once a player has reached the end zone line they must wait there until the coach signals they may try to run back once all players have attempted to run across. Players can only wait a maximum of 5 seconds after the coach signals they can run from the end zone line - if they do not move after this time they automatically become a catcher.

Does anyone have a drill to encourage under 11's to come forward for a pass rather than asking for the overhead pass all the time as they are 'running away' from the ball in their haste to get to the circle?

How do I get two new girls to move quickly?

A am a new coach of a year 6 team. I have two girls that did not play netball last year and their level of play is not up to the rest of the team. I want to encourage them but they are either very slow and/or disinterested. When the whistle is blown it seem to take them ages to move of the line for a centre pass. The other girls are long gone. How can I light a fire and get them moving quickly? Thanks!

Need some help on a dispute on a decision I made during a match I was umpiring recently.A player was tying her shoe laces in my half of the court. A goal had been scored in the half I was umpiring. Centre stepped in the centre circle whilst this player was still attending to her shoe lace. So in affect she had not got herself on side and then gone off side she just did not get on side.I blew the whistle to start play as the centre was ready. As the player who was in my half and was off side, I blew for offside.Can I have clarification on this please, was I correct, or should the other umpire have called this offside even though the player was in my half?Secondly, a reputable umpire told me a couple of months ago, that the umpire blowing the whistle to start the game at a centre pass, controls both sides for off side? I.e. All players that go offside at the centre pass, to the left and right of the centre circle. I was not suite about this so need clarification on that too.Thanks in anticipation.

Offside question - centre pass...

I am an umpire as well as a player, and I had a situation a few weeks ago that challenged my knowledge. On a centre pass. Referring to the third lines. Do the third lines form part of the centre court or are they part of the goal third. In other words at what point would GA,GD,WA and WD become off side? If their foot/feet were on the line? Same for the Centre, would she be off side if her foot/feet were on the line?

HiCan a shooter rebound the ball( from a backline throw in) off the post and jump onto court, catch the ball from the post rebound and then shoot? It seems crazy to me but I have been told that this is now allowed?
