Netball: return pass

1 v 1 - Actual Defending

Two feeders stand in middle of the court, either side of the center circle. The attacking player passes the ball out to the feeder and then runs out, looking for the return pass. The defender must react and look to push the attacker wide and/or intercept the ball.

The winger players passes the ball into the centre and then runs to the first blue cone The winger then cuts inside and receives the ball back at the top of the D As the winger receives the return pass the player in the D cuts outside and in to receive the ball, before taking a shot.

Competing for the ball

The feeder starts the drill by throwing the ball up for both players to compete for and try to gain control of the ball. Repeat and rotate roles after 5 passes.

Interception

Blue number 1 dummies a shot and passes the ball to number 2. Number 1 runs across towards the goal, to receive the return pass and shoots. The two attackers become next two defenders

Shooting

Jumping Intercept

2 balls. The middle player faces player 1 and jumps to receive a high pass. The middle player then turns and receives another high pass from player 2.

Pass and Return

Red player 1 passes the ball to Blue player 1, and then runs forward to receive a return pass from Blue player 1. Red player 1 passes to Blue player 2, receives return pass and then passes the ball to Red player 2, and joins line behind Red player 2.

Footwork

Receive and return pass

Players work in groups of 3, with two players inside the grid and 1 outside with the ball. The outside player (1) passes the ball inside to the player on their team (2) and then runs inside the square to receive the pass back. After this player 2 runs out of the opposite side of the grid to receive a return pass from player 1 before restarting the drill. Player continue working in this way until the defender intercepts the ball. At that point the defender swaps with the player that lost the ball.

2 players with a ball and 2 static players in the middle. Player with the ball pass the ball to the left player then move across the square to receive the ball back in the opposite corner. Same thing on the way back pass left to receive ball back on opposite corner

Set Play - Attacking Centre

WA starts wide drawing the WD with her. GA also starts wide. The GA drives should time their run in court to receive the ball. The WA drives in court to receive the pass from the C who then runs up court to receive the return pass. The C then catches the ball and plays to the GA who has made the run to the other side to lose their marker and then passes to the GS to complete the move. C - WA - C - GA - GS

Attack

Zig-Zag Passes

Split the group into 6s with one ball per group. Red player 1 throws the ball to Blue player 1, and then receives a return pass while moving forward. Red player 1 then throws the ball to Blue player 2, who then passes onto Red player 2. Red player 1 takes place of Blue player 2 and Blue player 2 goes to back of queue. Red player 2 repeats practice in opposite direction. Progression - The posts move to receive the ball each time.

Split your players into 4s or more with 2 balls. Both blue players start with a ball. The blue players both throw the ball to the Red players who in turn return the ball.<br /><br /> After returning the ball the red players swap places.<br /><br /> Repeat once more. Time the cross-over moves so that players receive on the move.

The red players in the middle are static and receive and wall pass the ball back to the same player each time. Players on the outside receive the ball from the blue player to their left and pivot pass the ball to the red player in the middle. They then move to receive the wall pass back from the player in the centre on the other cone. Once they have received the ball back again the players passes it to the next blue player on the outside, after which they return to their starting cone.

4 players in a square ( cones can be used ) players pass the ball clockwise around the 4 corners of the square. After each pass the player follows the ball to the next corner and turns to return to receive the ball by the original corner when the ball comes round again. All players should be moving before they receive the ball.

1 player holds a ball high in each hand. On the command from this player (blue 1), the other 2, in competition with each other, run to a line, turn and sprint back to snatch their ball from the holder, then land correctly, turn and return ball to the blue 1.

Players pass the ball out to their feeder and then swap sides (going in front or behind the other passing player) to receive the return pass from the other feeder. Players receive the pass from the feeder and then pass to the next players for them to go again.

Pair your players up, with 1 ball per pair. The player that is the worker receives 3 passes to the left over an increasing distance, then repeat with 3 passes to the right (worker runs back to centre each time.) Encourage the worker to try to land on their outside foot.

The GK has a back line pass. The Centre takes up her position just in middle of transverse line giving the impression she is not going to be involved in this immediate passage of play... but SHE IS! The WD and GD roll away to opposite directions (taking their chasing opponents with them) leaving huge space for the centre to drive into receiving the ball at the top of the circle. The centre, remembering to use the 3rs (receive, rotate and release) passes to the WD, who passes to the GD. Again the ball has progressed from defence to attack over 2/3rds of the court in 3 &quot;simple&quot; passes.

Divide your group into three equal groups and add two defenders inside the triangle. The three attackers attempt to keep the ball between them, driving after they pass to move and be available for the return pass.Play starts with the ball at the bottom end of the triangle, while the two players at the other end will come forward ready to offer to receive a pass.Once the ball is passed, the player who didn't receive the ball should drive to be in space to receive another pass.Finally the player who started with the ball needs to make a move to receive the pass.Once all three players have received the ball the ball is passes to the next group of players, ready for the drill to start again.This drill is ideal for teaching players to offer a passing option to their team-mates.

5+ players, 1 ball, half court space.1. One player sets up near baseline as the feeder with the ball.2. All other players (workers) set up near third line behinf eachother.3. Workers drive forward and receive a pass from the feeder, they pass back, peel to the right and join the back of the line. Progression 1: Players alternate the side they peel out to. Progression 2: Working players peel out as they were but then cut back into the midline to receive another pass. Worker passes back to the feeder.Progression 3: Two workers drive out together. One will get a pass from the feeder. They will then peel out and drive towards the midline to recieve a long pass.Progression 4: As with progression 3 but with one defender in the mix. Players must sprint facing forward out around the red cone. After reaching it they should quickly change direction and sprint diagonally back to the blue cone. Players' heads must always be facing forwards (looking over their shoulder when running backwards). Repeat several times. Resting time for players is waiting for their team-mates to complete this running drill.

Five attackers, each with a ball, are positioned on the edge of the circle with two other attackers inside the circle. The two ball-less players have to move around inside the circle with sharp movements, calling for the ball from the feeders and passing the ball back to the feeder.

The players inside the circle have to move around the circle quickly, calling for the ball. When they receive the pass they need to pass to a player without a ball (not the same player who passed to them originally).

What is the best way to defend a holding shooter. At the moment I am trying to get my Keeper to keep moving around the holding shooter, mixing up going behind and infront, so the feeder isn't 100% sure what the holding space is. Defending off court player.When a player in general play goes off court to improve her position , does the defender HAVE to allow her onto the court ? OR can she block her from returning. Eg shooter on one side of the circle goes off court around the goalpost and tries to return to court on the other side but defender {on court} blocks her from returning. Is this legal ???

Teenager new to coaching... Suggestions welcomed

Hi all, My daughter is about to start coaching for the first time and it's expected she'll have a group of 10 years olds in C or D grade. I'm struggling to remember what her capabilities were at that age and she's looking for some suggestions for drills to start off with until she gets a handle on where they're at. Is anyone currently working with kids around that age/ability bracket? Does anyone know if any of the weekly drills are aimed at beginners/introductory levels? From the ones I'm seen, they're aimed at an intermediate level so I'm assuming some of the games would be OK, but most of the drills would be beyond their capability.Thanks in advance.
