Cover Defence: Ball and Hole Game

Two defenders work inside a circle of players with one ball. The red players must pass the ball around the group and try to keep possession. The two defending players must work together to mark the ball, keeping the 3ft distance, while the other defenders 'zones' the space. So, if Red 1 receives the ball, Green 1 (the nearest defender) calls "ball" and goes to cover the ball and Green 2 moves back, calls "hole" and zones the area.

Defending the Overlap

Have 2 defenders, who take it in turns to mark a play. If the defender is drawn to A1s run then A2 can pass back to the next person in the A1 line which gives the A1 in play the option to open out to receive the ball. A1 has the options again to play to A2 who has run in or straight to A3.

Passing

Dictating a Centre Pass

Set up 3 cones along a transverse line, one in the middle, one at the edge of court and one in between these. Have one defender behind the line and one in front. The attackers aim is to come over the line to receive a Centre pass, inbetween the inside cones. If the attacker receives the ball: In between the middle cones: 1pt to the attacker In between the outside cones: 1pt to the defenders Keep score out of 6 attempts. The defenders need to be aware of each other and work to restrict the movements of the attacker.

Passing coordination 1

Three feeders stand on a line and start with two balls, opposite the worker. The feeders take it in turns to pass to the worker who must return the pass to the player without the ball (not the same person who passed to you).

WA and GA coordinating Centre Pass

Set up a big square 9m x 9m, split into four 3m x 3m squares. It can be put into the context of court by positioning it just inside the shooting third. Position 2 attackers and 2 defenders as shown in diagram. A feeder starts outside of the squares with the ball. There is another defender in between the feeder and the square. This drill looks to progress a Centre pass from the 1st phase (receipt of the 1st pass) to the 2nd phase (passing options from the 1st phase). One of the attackers has to receive 1st pass over the front line, as they would in a game situation. The attackers then look to 2nd phase option: the second pass that looks to move the ball into the attacking third.

In this exercise you have two feeders and then three attackers against two defenders. The first feeder (player x) starts the drill with a pass to white player 1. White player 1 has to pivot and then try and pick out the unmarked player. The defenders have to pick up one white player each and make the interception if the ball is passed to the player they've picked up.

Run and pass - Two options Mov...

The attackers need to sprint and change direction. 6 players stand Indian file.  The player with the ball faces the line. The first player leads in one direction, 2nd player immediately runs in the opposite direction.  One player receives the ball with the other one doubling back to receive the next pass. After both runners have received the ball they should pass back to the thrower. Repeat with two new attackers.

8+ players in 2 lines facing opposite eachother at diagonal points of a rectangle. One player at the start of one line with the ball. Player at the front of the other line drives to the space opposite the player with the ball and recieves the long pass. They then pass back to the line they came from with the short pass and join the back of that line.Same thing happens from the opposite line.As the coach calls "short" or "long" the rectangle to get larger or smaller.
