Netball: opposite direction

Across the court

The player at one end starts by passing to the 1st attacking player. That attacking player then has to try and pass the ball to the 2nd attacking player. This continues until the final attacking player has passed the ball to the 2nd static player at the other end of the court. After which the player in the middle reverse rolls and the practice repeats in the opposite direction.

Interception

Choosing Sides - 5 players

On receiving the ball from the feeder player 1 turns. Players 2 and 3 should both make strong sideways movements in opposite directions, the defender can go either way. Player 1 must try and pass to the unmarked player as quickly as possible.

Attack

Diagonal Cut to Lead

In turn the worker feeds the ball to the feeder and then drives to the spot. The worker then changes direction and drives on to the fast and flat pass from the feeder. Finally the worker passes to the next player in the opposite line who then passes to the feeder and repeats the exercise in opposite direction.

Dodging

Split players into 4s inside a coned area. The attackers (white) start with the ball on the outside of the playing area. To begin with White 2 feints a movement one way and then sprints in opposite the direction (to begin with use a passive defender). After white 1 has passed the ball, she then has to do a feint dodge and run in opposite direction to receive the ball. Try to get 3 / 5 passes in a row before possession changes.

Pass and move in opposite direction

Players pass the ball clock wise. After each pass the player runs to touch the cone of the player in the opposite direction they passed to and then runs back to their own cone.

Run and move into space

Player 1 runs towards the player with the ball on reaching the cone player moves to receive the ball from player 2 by the outside cone and passes the ball to player 3. Player 1 moves to stand behind player 2. Player 2 repeats the practice with player 3 in the opposite direction.

Run and pass - Two options

The attackers need to sprint and change direction. 6 players stand Indian file.  The player with the ball faces the line. The first player leads in one direction, 2nd player immediately runs in the opposite direction.  One player receives the ball with the other one doubling back to receive the next pass. After both runners have received the ball they should pass back to the thrower. Repeat with two new attackers.

The Backline Pass Roll

The GK has a back line pass. The Centre takes up her position just in middle of transverse line giving the impression she is not going to be involved in this immediate passage of play... but SHE IS! The WD and GD roll away to opposite directions (taking their chasing opponents with them) leaving huge space for the centre to drive into receiving the ball at the top of the circle. The centre, remembering to use the 3rs (receive, rotate and release) passes to the WD, who passes to the GD. Again the ball has progressed from defence to attack over 2/3rds of the court in 3 "simple" passes.

Coach starts the drill by passing the first ball. First 2 players drive in opposite angles and the coach passes ball to player 1. Player 2 then changes direction and drives onto the second ball The second players now passes the ball to one of the 2 players driving from opposite direction.

Zig-Zag Passes

Split the group into 6s with one ball per group. Red player 1 throws the ball to Blue player 1, and then receives a return pass while moving forward. Red player 1 then throws the ball to Blue player 2, who then passes onto Red player 2. Red player 1 takes place of Blue player 2 and Blue player 2 goes to back of queue. Red player 2 repeats practice in opposite direction. Progression - The posts move to receive the ball each time.

Players work in groups of 4, with 1 ball between them. The first player runs towards the centre The player with the ball throw up a high ball for the receiving player to jump and receive. The receiving player catches the ball, and turns in the air, so they land facing the opposite direction to the player who passed to them (turning 180 degrees). The receiving player then passes the ball, and follows their pass. Drill continues.

Both players move in the same direction with the feeder moving backwards. The feeder must play the ball to any side of the receiving player, within arm's reach, for them to react to, collect and pass back as quickly as possible. Players progress like this from one side of the court to the other, taking short fast steps, staying up on the balls of their feet.

Players must face the same direction the whole way round (direction faced indicated by small arrow) - to achieve this they should: Sprint along the first side facing forward. Side step along the second edge. Jog backward along the penultimate side and then Side step along the final edge of the grid.

In pairs, 1 player - the statue - holds a ball aloft in one hand. Partner runs, leaps and snatches the ball, lands with the correct footwork, Once theabove is achieved with balance, add a turn once the player has landed so player is facing the same way she has come from and returns the ball to partner. Once the ball has been snatched, the statue could sprint to another point to receive the ball before the exercise is repeated.<BR> Progress this practice through all 3 stages until all players are balanced

The idea of the practice is that the ball starts on opposite sides and both teams pass the ball in the same direction around their square. Working in 2 teams players must make passes across the square. When the ball reaches the other side it counts as a point. The teams work in opposite directions, one team horizontally (blue), one team vertically (green).Players on the outside edge can move up and down the length of their line, but can not move off it.Players in the centre of the square can move anywhere within the square but must make sure they are aware of the players around them.The focus of the practice is on the defenders.The 2 defenders (red) work inside the square and can only intercept passes from their allocated team.

Break your players into two teams. One team goes to attack, and one to defence. There is no kicking in this game. Normal laws of rugby do not apply e.g. the ball can be passed in any direction. The ball is passed from player to player, but once the ball is caught - the ball carrier must stop moving. They can move only to pass the ball to another player. The defenders can close down attackers, working to remove attacking options. Defenders can intercept the ball, but must leave the ball carrier alone once the ball is cause. They can apply pressure on the pass, similar to the pressure that a bastleball player might apply (but consider using this as a progression). Tries can be scored by attackers who catch the ball inside the oppositions in goal area. Dropped balls result in a turn over.

Two players are passing the ball between them in a consistent rhythm. The defender stands behind one of the attackers and has to try and time their move to get in front and intercept the ball. Following the successful interception the defender passes the ball to the opposite player and then runs to the other side, ready to intercept again!

How to get u/11 players to come forward for a pass?

I currently coach an u/11 division 3 netball team. I find that possession is frequently lost with held ball calls and passes that do not reach the player that they were intended for. The girls always look to lob the ball to each other which I instruct them not to do and remind them to come forward for a pass however they always stay behind their players and I do not know what to do. I have taught them breaking styles such as pushing off their left foot and running in the opposite direction, but they do not seem to be using this in games. Are there any ideas that I can use to make breaking fun and more memorable so that they are more likely to try it in games?

Next week I'm due to play against two really talented defenders who are both very tall! One of them use to be my coach so I'm feeling the pressure- she's very quick and can push you to the edge of the circle well. What would be the best way to outwit her?
