Netball: netball blocking

how do I get a defender to use a tighter defence on the goalers?

hi i jut started playing GK for a local netball team and i am struggling abit, im not sure on what i can and cant do, ie jumping and waving my arms etc plz help

My GD was do face marking in a game and doing a fantastic job at blocking the GA entering the circle and not being able to shake her off, the umpire for the other team repeatedly called her for intimidation.To me it did not appear to be intimidation and the player herself umpires and sees this in many of the high level games. She is not pushing, no arms are used in fact it is the other players pushing into her. Is this intimidation I thought that was a pretty tough call. What constitutes as intimidation?

My teams are getting a bit older now and watching ANZ challenge and Aus NZ games the way the defenders defend or block has certainly changed. The defenders now have their backs to the attackers arms out wide what we used to say was airplane arms which would be picked up as obstrution. In the circle the defender is between goal and player at the edge still with back to the player and side shuffles with arms out wide blocking the shooter moving into the circle.  Is this not obstruction or are they doing something that does not constitute an obstruction call. Netball is certainly changing quickly in the way it is played

Is a defence allowed to block a shooter from entering the circle with their body but not using their arms?

I am not sure how to teach my girls how to defend a shooter who catches a pass with the splits and then sets up to shoot. Can anyone assist. Girls are aged 15 & 16yrsthanks

Hi, this is a question for both me as a player and to pass on to players in social netball teams that I organise. I'm looking for any advice or tips to pass on to attacking players who are 'blocked out' by defenders, for instance when GS comes out to support and then can't get back into the circle. I often feel like I'm ballroom dancing with defenders rather than getting away from them! Any short drills that I could do with teams (we occassionally meet up and do a bit of pre-match training) would also be great. And if anyone has anything that individual players can do in their own time that would awesome! I'm a big fan of Rae Druce's Netball Fitness ebook, the advice for skipping & plyometrics is really transforming my flat footwork and jumping ability so anything I can do and encourage other players to do would be great. How to get my players to create space. They are under 14's and not all play club. aAt times they crowd or fall over each other.

I'm very new to netball having grown up playing basketball and rugby at high levels and recently was getting taught by a 'more experienced coach' as this is mixed netball and the dynamic is very different. He said to the men that to minimise being called by umpires for being too close as the height difference percieves they're, one tactic is to turn your back and to get up close and to stare at the hoop. He said if he were umpiring he wouldnt count this for intimidation as there no eye or physical contact, simply blocking some of their view. I saw one of the men try this in a match yesterday and the umpire called them for intimiation? I'm trying to learn the margins as it seems every umpire/coach has their own opinion of this.Thanks in advance!

How do you beat a player that is blocking/face defending an attacker who is finding it hard to get free? Particularly when they are trying to go forward into the space for the ball.

is it allowed to defend by blocking a players vision by waving hands in front of eyes?

I'm an accredited coach doing some research on blocking as I had never had a player called for 'interference'. Is it within the rules to block your opponent from leading down court whilst facing her? The example is with my WD going out for centre pass, then blocking her WA (whilst facing her) to delay WA's lead down court. I play school and state netball as a GK/GD, when my other player is defending the GS or GA, I hold on to her defenders leg/hand for an extra lean. Because I'm quite larger and taller than most girls and already have a pretty good lean, when I ask my defender to hold me so that i am closer to deflecting the shot, she uses two of her hands and her body strength to hold me. My coach told me not to do this because she believed I wasn't allowing myself nor my other player to get an intercept or rebound, even though we had gotten most rebounds and had gotten a few intercepts with this technique. Is this an disadvantage or advantage to us?

After my opponent release the ball can I use my body but not arms to block in front of her so as to prevent her from going to the front?( In centre third) If the opponent just run ahead and crash on the defender, is it a contact?Or in fact the action of the defender preventing the attacker to run towards goal third is obstruction or a rule called" causing contact"?

If my C and GD block the GA so that she can't get into her attacking third is that okay. They are basically facing them and getting in their way so that it makes it hard for the GA to get free? Also, if the GA then runs into one of my defenders and the ball is just about to be shot by their GS do I pull it up as a free pass in the centre third or do I presume that it does not affect the movement of the ball and let the GS continue with their shot?

This happened numerous times in a recent game where the GD was blocking the GA up the court and the GA left the court and tried to return from the back line under the post. The GA was insisting that the GD was "marking off court" and on a couple of occasions the umpire called this and awarded a penalty to GA under the post? The GD was on court at all time whilst marking.

We are playing in n a grand final this week and the opposition has a very tall GS and holds very well. I am thinking of getting my defences to double team her but wanting to know best way to teach this & also what's the best way of stopping the GA (just getting WD & c to try & block her getting in the ring) any thoughts on best way to beat a tall shooter. The girls are 13 but played a lot of netball. Thanks
