5 Point Interception

Have two players passing a ball back and forth about 5m apart. Set up 5 cones behind one of the players, in a semicircle behind them, about 2m away from them. These cones will dictate the starting positions (with varying difficulty) of the defender. The defender needs to stand by the first cone, before running in to intercept a pass to the player near them. They then pass the ball back to the opposite player, run to the next cone and back to intercept the next pass. The purpose is to get 5 successful intercepts (one from each of the cones) in a row.

Interception

Body Angles- 5 Points

Players set up like five points on a die- these are the feeders. Workers start in the middle facing out to one of the feeders who has the ball. Worker recieves a pass in the middle and passes back. They then drive on an angle towards the the far point on the same side as the ball ensuring they can see the ball and body angle is indicating where they would like the ball. Feeder sends a long pass to the point the worker is heading to. Worker then passes a long pass to the far diagonal feeder. They then front cut the middle point to receive another pass on the drive and pass back to the feeder. Once again they turn body angle to see the ball as well as indicate where they are heading and drive to the last far point on the die and receive a long pass from the feeder. Repeting again, the long diagonal pass and front cut for the pass in the middle. Roatate players after player makes a few successful run-throughs.

Movement

End Zone Game

Using cones create two end-zones either side of the middle 3rd on the court and divide your players into 2 equal teams. One player starts with the ball in their end zone and starts the game with a pass. The team in possession of the ball has to always keep one player in the oppositon's end zone - This players has to be marked by 2 defenders. The rest of the players play in the centre, this creates an overload for the team in possession. The aim of the game is for the team in possession to score as many points as possible before losing possession or within a time limited. A point is scored with every pass and 5 points are scored for every pass made to the player in the end zone.

Interception

GK Interceptions

Inside the shooting circle set up a smaller semicircle with cones, dividing the the semicircle into an inner and outer section of roughly the same width. Feeder starts play in the goal third, to one side. The GS runs out of the circle to receive the pass. They then have the option to pass to an attacker (who is on the edge of the circle opposite to the side feeder) or to pass back to the unmarked feeder who has run in. Whichever of these receives the ball will pass it back to the attacker once the attacker has run into the circle. Points: If the attacker receives the ball inside the inner circle then they get 1pt. If the defender makes a successful intercept or forces the attacker to receive the ball in the area of the circle outside of the cones then they get 1pt. The first to 5 points wins. If the attacker receives the ball you can get them to take a shot, and have the defender recover quickly to mark.

Defence

Noughts and crosses

Set up 9 cones in a square in the middle of a third. Two teams of 3 are lined up on the sidelines of the third, with each player holding the colour bib of their team in their hand. They will play a game of noughts and crosses (tic tac toe). Each player will run forward and place their bib on a cone. They first team to form a 3 bib line (diagonal, horizontal, vertical) of their teams colours wins a point. Rule: Teams are not allowed to place their bibs in a line on the closest row as this makes it too easy. If neither team has won from the initial run in then players can move their own team's bibs continually until one team wins. If you have bigger teams, number your players and call 3 numbers out to start. They can then run back to the sideline to tag another player in to move a bib.

Split your players into 2 teams of 5. Teams play inside the coned area. The first team to complete 10 consecutive passes scores a point. Number of players and size of playing area can be varied depending on age and ability of your players.

Set up: Five cones set up as a square with one cone in the center, 1 ball, 4-6 players.Two feeding players are set up in between cones in line with the center cone.Two attacking players start on the centre cone and choose a corner cone to drive out to, each driving to opposite cones.Attackers time their drive so they receive their pass on the centre cone.Attackers are to create a ‘bow’ shape by driving to the outer cones one at a time and receiving a pass on the middle cone between each drive.

Set up: Half court, 3 stationary feeders, 3 balls, 1 attacker, 1-3 defence.<br><br>Feeders are placed in an extended triangle formation. Each feeder has a ball.Attacker drives out from transverse line to first feeder where a pass is received, attacker returns pass and moves around the feeder.Attacker does so with the other two feeders in the extended triangle formation creating a 'zig zag'.Attacker works her way through the 'zig zag' in both directions without errors.

Set up an area of about 15 x 15m. Have 2 teams of 5+ players, with 1 one ball.The players can run anywhere in the area but can't run with the ball. The first team that get 10 passes wins a point. If the ball in intercepted or dropped then turnover. The 1st pass is after the turnover is free.Stop the game every 1 minute to stretch for 30 seconds.

Set up: Shooting circle, 4-7 players, 1 ball, cones.Divide three channels across the court (you can refer to these as channel 1, 2 or 3 or first, second, economy class).Use cones to determine channels for players that are learning the areas.One channel in front of center transverse line (center pass area).Another channel between transverse line and top of circle.Final channel is from top of the circle to baseline (shooting area).Center feeder to pass ball to first attacker who will drive from WA position to middle of the first channel.Attacker to turn and pass to second receiver who will drive circle edge and pass the ball into the shooter.Shooter to shoot.

10+ players2 stationary feeders, one on baseline and one around centre circle. 2 groups of 4+ players line up on either sideline. 2 players run from both sidelines, high five the opposite player in the middle of the court and then run out forming a &quot;V&quot; shape with their partner facing a feeder.Feeders pass to one of the pair facing them.Player that does not receive the ball cuts back and drives towards the other feeder, receive a pass from their partner.Ball is then passed on to the opposite feeder.

Set up a triangle with two players on each point.Players have to weave from the back to in front in order to receive the pass from the player to their right (ball travels in a clockwise direction).Once players have received the pass they then pass the ball to the front of the next point in the triangle for another player to weave and receive.

Full court, 14 players, 1 umpire, 2 sets of bibs, 2 hoops, 8 cones. A normal game situation is set up.4 cones are set up down each sideline. Players are to run around a cone, on the sideline, once they have passed the ball to a player.Once they have run around the cone then they can come back into play.

Pass and DriveSet up: 1 ball, shooting third, 4 lines of playersThe ball starts with player on middle of transverse line (A).Player from the line midway down sideline (B), drives in front of A to receive a pass.Player B passes from middle of the third/top of the circle on a diagonal out to player standing at the corner of transverse and sideline intersection (C). Player B joins line player C is from. Player C delivers ball to a player (D) who has driven from baseline corner to the edge of the circle. At the same time player D drove out, another player (E) from the same line drives into the circle. Player D delivers ball to player E in the circle. Players D and E act as WA/C and GS/GA feeding in and out of circle. Player E may choose to put up a shot. Player E delivers ball back to starting point A.

Split your players into groups of 4 with one ball. Each group forms 2 lines. The front person from the 1st line (red player) runs out to receive ball from the blue player at the front of the other line. After receiving the ball they pivot and throw to the next person in their line. Players then sprint to rejoin the back of their line. Repeat Try to get this activity to be free flowing and continuous

Split players into pairs with one ball and three cones, placed in a triangle. The feeder stands above the top of the triangle. Using quick, small steps the worker has to rotate around the cones in a figure of 8 before then receiving the ball and returning it to the feeder at the top of the triangle. Start slowly before gradually increasing the pace.

Intercept with Active Feeder I...

Have two feeders passing a ball back and forth about 5m apart.  Position two cones on either side of one feeder, making a gate. The defender has to run between one gate after an intercept, before making the next intercept, alternating sides. The feeder at the opposite end has the option of holding onto the ball if the defender moves too early. If this happens then the other feeder who was set to receive the ball will move in between the cones that the defender has just come from, to receive the ball out to the side. This will help the defender recognise if they are moving too early or too late and make them recover to move back for the intercept.

The Star Passing - Netball Dri...

This practice encourages concentration and awareness. 3 players (A, B and C) stand on the cones making the top three points of a star (they are static during the practice), the fourth point in made up of a queue of players in pairs. The first pair start. Players 1 passes the ball out to player A and follows their pass, running around them. Player 2 runs staright forward and receives the pass from player A in the centre of the star. Player 2 then passes out to player B and follows their pass running around them. Meanwhile player 1 has run back into the centre to recieve from player B. Player 1 then passes it out to player C and follows their pass around them. Player 2 runs in to receive the pass from player C in the centre Player 2 then passes the ball out to player 1 and player 1 passes it to the next pair. They both then join the back of the line. Rotate the static players as and when.

Blue 2 moves to receive ball from Blue 1 and returns the ball to Blue 1, who immediately throws to White2. Blue2 attempts to intercept pass. When completed, reverse exercise to receive on the other side.Blue 1 moves out etc.

Super Star Movement - Netball ...

Split players into pairs with 1 ball between them and set up as diagram (half a third each if available).Black C is the feeder and has the ball. The white C is the worker and will be working for 2 minutes and will then swap roles with the black C.The worker starts in the corner - side steps the horizontal lines then changes pace and direction, while sprinting the vertical lines.The worker then heads towards the feeder to receive a pass when the feeder wishes to put the ball in.The worker then sprints back to the corner changes pace and direction back to a side step then repeats around the whole grid creating a star shape.The worker works for 2 minutes trying to complete as many circuits of the star as possible in the 2 minutes.The feeder can only pass the ball to the worker when they are driving forwards to start with.

Passing, defending, getting free

I'm coaching u/10's and have an excellent A team, but the B team have learners who haven't been playing netball so long. Does anyone have one or two basic activities, easy to understand (for them) which I can drill them with for passing, defending and getting free, as well as something for the shooters. They are always all over the place (we do practice channels) and really struggle to get free - they run a bit and then just stop to wait for the ball. Anything, even just some advice would be appreciated! :)
