Hi. How old are the players you are working with? I think the best starting point is to look at the attacking and defending principles. When I attack I want to create, maintain and exploit the space and therefore you can talk to your players about when to pass and when to dribble, running with the ball, forward runs without the ball, switching play etc...all of these things require an understanding of positioning. When I defend I want to deny and restrict space and deflect the ball away from the dangerous area. You could start by working on defending 1 v 1 before progressing into 2v2, 3v3 etc. As you progress you will introduce understanding of the defensive role which again will include positional work.
