It depends. To get good footwork in the beginning I teach my younger players or a first time defender to front to front defence. It helps them keep up with their opponent. But as their footwork improves, then get them to turn around so they are facing the play and more important the ball so they can learn to read play and anticipate possible intercept opportunities.
