What drills are there to help stop 10 year olds from stepping
HI,
I play a game where they run around the court as quickly as they can and when I blow the whistly they have to freeze, then I introduce the ball.
Hope that helps
Also, go back to the basics and teach them the two footed landing (landing with two feet on the ground at the same time). Once they have that under control do some drills where they run on to the pass and land one footed (land with outside foot then balance up by grounding the other foot) Hope this helps.
I had one 10 year old who didnât step during practice and drills, but would in a game as she was running so fast, an umpire suggested to get her to jump when she received the ball, we tried this and so far it is working for her.
Line them at one end of the court and ask them to run and when you blow the whistle they have to do a small 'antelope' leap - leaping with one leg in front and lending on the same leg with knees bent. As they get used to it get them to run faster. When in a conditioned game, as them to lend this way when they receive the ball, if not, give the ball to the other side and it will get them to remember. Another reason they are stepping is that they stop before they receive the ball and stretch for it. Good Luck!
I've had some success with a the term "hop to stop". Get kids lined up on the base line then run to each third line hopping to stop at each line then pivot in circle on the foot that they hopped on. I get them to say it as they do it. You might get some leaps but this has the same effect of isolating the landing foot. Start with slow jog building speed as proficiency increases.
Let them run, jump and land in a "Hula hoop"
