Hi, Need help on how to coach 10yr old girls......

Hi, I am coaching a group of 10yr old girls who majority have never played netball before. Am I better to rotate them in positions or let them get use to the ones that I allocate them too.. Also what are some good drills that I can teach them Defence or Attack... I have taught them the basics of passing, shooting but need help on alot of other drills... We only have training once a week in which I find hard because I believe they need more training days and we only have 2 training sessions to go till the season starts. Could you please give me some helpful ideas to help my girls understand netball and how to play netball without me having to put the pressure on them like as if I was coaching under 16s or something...

Hi Steph,

seeing as your season start is just around the corner I thought I'd try and help you out by pointing you in the direction of some recently answered questions that were fairly similar to your own one. Hope these help:

If you do decide to rotate your players here are some additional answers to help you create a rotation roster.

Best of luck for your season!

since most have never played before, maybe treat the first few games as a learning for all of you and try lots of different combinations.  some will work and some wont.

for 10yr olds i think teaching shadow defence is the easiest.  ie the defence defendign from in front.  there will be lots of drills in here to do basic shadowing.  make sure they are defending correctly with their arms not obstructing and sticking close to their player while they are moving forwards and back.  add someone passing the ball and let them feel what getting that intercept is like because they are in front of their player.

attack you want to teach your shooters to drive forward and pass out.  start with no defence and have players lined up around the circle and 2 shooters moving around the circle. add yourself as the defence against the 2 shooters and put only a small amount of effort into it, and slowly build up.  then add in your 2 defence players.  once they are driving forward to take passes, add more and more defence inside the circle to crowd it.  its a lot of fun but teaches them to get around players and drive forward.  then revert back to just 2 defence and they will see a huge difference.

i also like teaching what i call peak a boo pass where one of the shooters sets up to pass, and the other shooter steps to one side and the takes a quick little pass closer to the pole.

at the end of the day, keep the techniques simple and basic.  dont try and teach them too much and confuse them.  once they master one skill move onto the next.

good luck.
