Tennis: Keep the opponent on the backhand side

Thank you very much for the marvellous site.
Nick, Tennis coach

DESCRIPTION

Player A serves to the T from the ad side. Player B hits forehand cross-court return and both players rally using only backhands cross-court.

COACHING POINTS

At all levels of performance many times consistency of backhand decides about who will leave the court as a winner. Many juniors can't hit the backhand over and over again in cross-court direction or they are impatient and go for risky down the line shot. Both of these scenarios make his/her chances for winning much smaller so working on the backhand stroke is a basic skill that should be addressed during every practice session.

In this drill players work on backhand cross-court rally with additional strokes as serve and return. First shots guarantee some kind of surprising element because every serve and return is different so players have to adjust to each one individually. After that backhand cross-court rally starts so coach can see how players are able to maintain good consistency and proper decision making. For more advanced players coach can set up zones and make this drill competitive (points for hitting the zones in a rally).
