As a coach this is a skill which is usually only practiced by fly halfs and rarely practised by the full team.

Playing kicking games will highlight 3 key areas:

  1. The importance a kick can have in attack.
  2. The benefit of catching a high ball cleanly and then attacking.
  3. The counter attack can be instrumental from a bad kick as the defence can be unorganised and ineffective.

The session will also teach players when to utilise a kick and when to keep the ball in hand. It is important regardless of positions that all players have the ability to catch a high ball cleanly and understand when a kick can benefit an attack.

Hold ball nearly vertical with bottom hand, with top hand steadying rather than holding. Keep head over the ball during run up planting your non-kicking foot close to where you will drop the ball to keep your body balanced.
