  • Day 04

    December 4th

    Drift, Cover or Blitz Touch

    DESCRIPTION

During a game of touch in a grid sized 30 x 30 metres the coach can choose to call blitz, drift or cover at any breakdown.

Upon hearing the call the defenders must run and touch the relevant line before running back to rejoin the game.

When the defenders are running to touch their line the attackers must turn their back on the defenders and give the ball to the coach. When the defenders are almost back in position the coach should roll the ball back to the attackers to restart the game.

The coach can later develop the game by introducing a visual clue to the defenders, instead of an audio cue, thus forcing the attackers to react to an unknown type of defence.

    COACHING POINTS

This game is excellent for visual acuity and learning how to attack differing defensive alignments.

Spaces will be created by the leaving defenders, which the attackers have to identify, decide on the appropriate action, and then attack.

This game also promotes identifying and attacking space, communication and handling.

You can also give individual players numbers to make more attackers versus fewer defenders (especially relevant for cover defence.

      Key Points:

      Look-Think-Do Process

      Visual Acuity (looking for space)

      Spatial awareness

Highlighting defensive systems and learning to attack appropriately and decision making.

  • Day 05

    December 5th

    Offload central

    DESCRIPTION

      Set Up

      Small 10 x 10m grid - 1/3rd of group on knees - 1/3rd with ball - 1/3rd supporting

Players move around grid - take tackle and off load to supporting player repeat continuously for 30 seconds - change roles

    COACHING POINTS

Carrying ball in two hands - off load with either one or two hands.

Use fend off if required - tackled player MUST make eye contact with target off load.

Control off load, not too flat and not too much weight - float ball - support player stays deep and runs onto ball

  • Day 06

    December 6th

    3 player circuit

    DESCRIPTION

This practice is set out with a inner square and a outer square. The players in their groups of 3 stand between the lines of the inner square with the working group stood inside the other players.

The first group of 3 starts to run across the grid passing the ball. When they reach the centre the ball is put down and they then run at a players with the pads on their left each pushing their player to the outer square. The players then swap.

The pad players run across to the tackle bags and push and tackle the bags to the outer square.

Players swap again now the new 3 players (third group) run to the ball pick it up and take the ball turn right to face the 3 players on the 12 o'clock side of the square and run into contact for the ball carrier to present the ball.

This ball is then picked up by the 3 players being pushed back and the drill starts again.

    COACHING POINTS

This is a complicated team relay practice in which you can put any elements you want to practice at the same time as improve the fitness of the players.

Once completed the whole practice is then repeated in the opposite direction.

  • Day 07

    December 7th

Handling warm up drill - progression

    DESCRIPTION

      1) First player runs outside cone and passes back inside to a trail runner.

      2) Two balls with each group - four groups running through at the same time.

      3) Make start point further back.

  • Day 08

    December 8th

Passing Evaluation - Assess your Players' Passing Skills

This session is designed to help your look at your players' ability to pass the ball off both hands over an ever increasing distance.

During this session your players are put under ever increasing pressure to see how far their passing skills have developed in order to give you an idea of their ability to play at a certain level and to highlight areas they may need to work on in the weeks to come. In this session we also cover why you should assess your players (and how to do it), so that you can profile your players (great for deciding who should make your starting line-up) and provide players with areas for personal improvement.

Passing is a key part of the game that you should factor into everything you do and constant evaluations of your players' ability to pass are a great way for you to maintain and develop their skill levels over the course of the season.

Have fun with this passing skills session, and in doing so get the best from your lads by encouraging them to enjoy evaluation sessions - even if there might be a team place on the line!

  • Day 15

    December 15th

Heads up Rugby - Think fast

This easy to set up session looks at testing and improving your players' ability to think on their feet, making quick decisions under pressure.

We hear the phrase "Heads up Rugby" time and time again but what does it really mean? Well, it refers to teaching your players to be alert, reacting to live situations and not simply running pre-practised backs moves. Ideally heads up rugby means your players will have the right instincts, knowing what to do at the right time.

To get your attacking players to react to different live situations and scan for space we open this session with a heads up passing exercise, before then giving you the power! In the following drills you control the difficulty, the more defenders you call out the more holes there will be in the defence for your attackers to exploit!

Test your players, create gaps in the defence and see how well your players make heads up decisions!

The game should be played at maximum pace. Encourage support runners to stay deep and follow ball carrier into the space being attacked.

Encourage players to think one phase ahead - that is to make a decision they cannot get through untouched so going to attack the space and off load to left or right - this encourages players to read the micro situations which occur when confronted with a flat defensive line.
