Every time the player with the ball is tackled, they have to release the ball and quickly pick it up again and stand up, ready to be tackled again.
Time how long it takes to happen 5 times in succession.
The player with the ball jogs in a straight line with the tackler coming in form the side to tackle them.
Starting with their backs to one another, two players stand 5 metres apart and run off in opposite directions along one side of the 20 metre grid.
At the corners of square each player cuts back into the grid and the player with the ball attempts to score by running with the ball into the far corner. The blue player's objective is to tackle them and prevent them from scoring.
The first player moves forwards, makes contact with the tackle bag and retreats diagonally to the line of cones.
The next player joins the line and both the players move forward and hit the tackle bag or shield before retreating back to the line again.
The third player then joins the line and all three players go out to meet the tackle bag, shield or fall on the ball.
Drill continues with all players involved.
Players stand 5 metres apart, only the attacking player moves in this drill, the tackler remains still as their partner approaches.
As the player gets close the tackler should keep their head up and engage the runner with either their left or right shoulder.
Holding around their knees tightly and driving with their shoulder they should allow the player to fall over their shoulder to floor.
Tacklers head behind the players with the ball (cheek to cheek) and the tackler to drive in with the shoulder. Player with ball landing on back first then placing the ball down.
In a grid an attacker is positioned on one end and a defender at the other end. Defender passes to the attacker who attempts to score against the defender within the grid.
Tracking hit (2 x 10 minutes in split groups) Set up 3 different colour cones on the gain line. 2m spacing (set up 3-4 areas with 2 pads) Defender starts in the middle cone. Attacker has a pad. On "GO" the Attacker with the pad runs straight to one of the 3 cones.The coach can shout a colour to direct the Attacker to a certain cone. The Attacker must run straight to it. This drill will test Defender's front on and side on tackles: left and right.

The player with the ball walks slowly in front of the other player. As the ball carrier is walking the defender should time their move so that they in the correct position to tackle when the player is in front of them. At this point the tackler should wrap their arms tightly around the other player's knees, position their head behind their bum and drive with their shoulder to bring the player to the ground. Falling to their bum before rolling onto their shoulder, once on the floor the other player should place the ball above their head on the ground.
