Rugby League Drill Demonstration


Players 3m apart – slightly crouched

One of pair nominated as tackler

On balls of feet, with feet shoulder width apart the coach calls either Right or Left.

Coaching points

Tackler advances with small steps – fast feet, stay slightly crouched, stay balanced.

Move in close to tackler, sink hips in squatting action, Keep head up.

Place called foot (L or R) between legs of partner

Engage same shoulder – Right foot – Right Shoulder – just below rib cage

Grip outside arm around leg and other arm around body – pull tight


Drive upwards by straightening legs

Player ends up over shoulder in ‘fireman's lift’ position, return player carefully to floor on their feet.
