  • Day 08

    December 8th

Attacking the Circle - Attacking Movement

If your players can't get the ball to your shooters in the circle they won't be able to shoot and score! That's why in this session we work on your players' passing in the final third, to improve service to your shooters!

    • The key to finding space and progressing the ball up the court, especially in congested areas like the attacking third, is an eight letter word beginning with M - of course the word I'm talking about here is Movement!

To get all your players to be more attacking when they're close to and around the edge of the circle this session works on improving two of their attacking weapons - speedy movement, with quick changes of direction and sharp passing!

To work on getting the ball to the circle from the centre pass this session starts with a movement warm up and then guides your players through the skills they'll need to get the ball to your shooters. Starting with a change of direction and passing exercise in groups of three this session gradually works towards the final competitive game, giving your players the chance to put their improved movement skills to the test!

      3. Everywhere: group run anywhere, dodging everyone.
      4. Nowhere: Group jump up, land and turn waiting for the next instruction.
    COACHING POINTS
Insist on quick reactions, fast feet and quick changes of speed from your players.
  • Day 11

    December 11th

    2 Vs. 2 - Pass and Move

    DESCRIPTION

Players line up in four lines, with 2 defenders between the opposing 4 lines.

Players take it in turns to run through the defender's areas as pairs. The player without the ball leads into the space. Working together they should try to pass and move, maintaining possession of the ball, from one side to the other.

If players successfully pass and support each other to the other side without losing the ball they pass the ball to the next pair and then join the back of the queue.

If the ball is intercepted though the pair who lost the ball become the defenders and the original defenders take the runner's place at the back of the queue.

    COACHING POINTS

Defenders must retreat to the half way before the first pass is made.

To start with defenders should remain passive. As the drill progresses so too should the defender's role in this drill.

    Mini-games and Warm Up Drills

This Sportplan Session is one to print and keep, with 10 fantastic warm up drills and exercises to bring new ideas to the court and prepare your players, mentally and physically!

Warming up can sometimes feel like a bit of a formality, with some gentle jogging and simple stretching, but it doesn't have to be dull! To get your players engaged from the off this week we've selected 10 drills which you can use as fun pulse raisers with your team!

Here's just some of the benefits of a thorough warm up:

    • It releases adrenaline and increases players' heart rate
    • Enables oxygen in the blood to travel with greater speed
    • Increases production of synovial fluid located between the joints to reduce friction and allows players' joints to move more efficiently!

You can save these drills for a rainy day, use them to add some spice to your warm ups or even incorporate them into your pre-match routine... The choice, is yours!

  • Day 16

    December 16th

    3 straight forward running evasions

    DESCRIPTION

      1. Double cut back:

WA runs one way, stops abruptly and changes direction before again changing direction for a second time to go and meet the pass.

      2. Cut back:

WA runs one way, stops quickly - changes direction and runs into space to meet the pass.

      3. Double bluff:

WA runs and stops, making it look as though they are going to cut back before continuing their run in the direction they were already running to meet the pass.

    COACHING POINTS

Every time they run the attacker should be thinking of what they can do to wrong foot their marker - always varying their tactics so that they don't become predictable.

  • Day 17

    December 17th

    Team practice

    DESCRIPTION

3 attacking player are the GA, WA, GS.

Centre passes the ball to GA, GA to WA, and WA to GS.

After every attack start again in the same positions.

  • Day 18

    December 18th

    Find Your Position

    DESCRIPTION

The group is divided into two teams, with each being told which way they are shooting.

The aim of the game is for the centre to get the ball to the player called out by the coach as quickly as possible.

    COACHING POINTS

To begin with there is no defensive element to this drill - the aim is simply for players to move the ball as quickly as possible (make sure players work the ball round the court).

      Variations:

Have two balls, one with each centre. When the coach calls out a player, see which team can get the ball to them the fastest! To make this more challenging you can call out multiple player positions to get the ball moving around the entire court.

A further progression could be that your players are only using one ball, but the players on the opposing team are now active - and can try to intercept the ball - preventing it from getting to its intended recipient!

  • Day 19

    December 19th

    Shuttle Circuits

    DESCRIPTION

Designed to work your players hard - working on their cardiovascular endurance and their plyometric strength.

Heel Flicks: Kick your heels up to your bum. Moving at 60% pace.

Side-steps: Face the base line from where you started. Players should side-step across, making sure they do not let their feet touch. Moving at 50% pace.

Star Jumps: Explosive jumps, with wide arms and legs.

Raised Knees: Jog across diagonally, raising knees to a 90 degree angle (can hold out hands to provide a target height). Moving at 60% pace.

Side-steps: Same again, this time facing the other direction. Moving at 50% pace.

Power Jumps: Starting from a crouched position players must jump up, with arms raised above their head.

Twisties: Rotate upper body from one side to the other with your arms while running diagonally across the area. Moving at 40% pace.

Sprint back: Players run back to the start line at 100% speed.

    COACHING POINTS

Players wait until the person in front of them has reached the first cone before setting off.

Players continue to work like this for 10 minutes. Depending on the age and fitness levels of your players you might like to extend this time.
