Netball: Split lead to maintain possession

I am currently coaching a senior college team and I have found Sportplan...

DESCRIPTION

Set up as shown in diagram.

Two attackers, one defender. Attackers drive in different directions and the feeder has to pass the ball to the attacker who the defender chooses to mark.

  • Split lead: start staggered, front attacker leads. One attacker should wait for the other to move first and then move into the other space so that both attackers don't end up going the same way.
  • Attackers drive out in separate directions and the defender chooses one to mark

Once the first attacker has received the ball, the other attacker then cuts back ready to receive the next pass. If the defender fails at the first intercept they should drop back to the 3ft mark ready to attempt an intercept on the 2nd pass.

COACHING POINTS

For the attacker who is marked to get free from the defender they should either:

  • Step in front of the defender before making their run, to stop the defender getting in front

or

  • Make the defender over-commit to a run and then the attacker can drop back for a lifted ball.

After the attacker has passed the ball on then it is important that they make the cut back to support the other Attacker and allow the play to move forward.
