Hockey: Escape Through the Gate (ball from the left)

DESCRIPTION

The defender runs through one of the two gates and attempts to tackle the ball carrier. The defender may only close down after the passer has rounded the cone.

Purpose :

To escape through one of the gates

COACHING POINTS

Passer

  • Move round the cone lifting the eyes as soon as possible
  • Pass off either foot
  • Pass hard if you wish receiver to go to gate 1
  • Pass sympathetically if you wish them to go to gate 2

Receiver

  • Stand with chest facing defender
  • Scan for the movement of the defender BEFORE receiving
  • Adopt a 90º angle at the knees "Ski position" this affords vision of the ball and closing defender
  • Identify which gate is free
  • Then "shift attention" to the ball and concentrate on the trap
  • Following the trap stay low for two steps

Running with the ball

  • Hands 15cm apart (higher than when pushing) this allows a full stride
  • Carry the ball directly in front using the base of the stick
  • Arms almost straight

"Look at the ball through the bottom half of the eyes"
