Players start facing each other hands on their heads, with six cones of different colours between them. Coach calls out a colour and the players must react quickly to grab that colour cone.
Coaching Points: call out more than one colour so the players have to react to grab more than one cone; change the exercise so that players start facing away from each other.
Calling Turns
This exercise builds on the reaction focus of the last exercise by introducing some movement into the drill. Players must keep focused while concnetrating on movement.
Two cones are set up for goal posts with a football resting on the top of each. The coach shouts out instructions to turn 180 degrees to either their left or right, or to dive to make a save at the cone.
Coaching Points: players should keep nimble on their toes.
Goal Keeper Turn
This exercise builds on the previous exercise by introducing a moving ball. Players must react faster to judge the path of the moving ball.
Goal keeper stands facing the goal. The coach throws the ball to anywhere in the goal just after he shouts to the goalkeeper to turn.
Coaching Points: the coach can make this exercise more difficult to test the goalkeeper by feeding the ball faster and wider.
