Although you may not realise it, courage is the foundation for other virtues in life, such as honesty and compassion; for example, if someone is taught about honesty but then doesn't show the courage to follow through with this, then they will not develop. Courage is a quality which can often be applied to sport too, and it's important that your athletes are taught about the importance of showing courage whilst on the sports field!

What is courage?

Courage is the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain etc without fear.

In sport, athletes will need to show courage in many different areas, if they want to become successful and reach a high level. You as a coach (or even as a team-mate, friend or family) can help teach courage to your players in various ways, and one is looking to build their confidence.

These two traits go hand-in-hand so by building your player's confidence, they'll become far more comfortable in their ability and mindset, both on and off the sports field. The more confident they became, the more likely they'll be able to find the courage to stick up for what's right and against what is wrong, so give your players plenty of encouragement! Show praise when courage is shown, whether that's sticking up for fellow players or standing up for themselves, making it clear that conflict is not always wrong.

Endeavour to become a role model and show them courage; whether this is you standing up for something that's not right or trying something yourself that's difficult or new. One of the best ways to develop courage is to model this to your players, as they look to you as their leader and will help them to develop into a better player and person. By becoming a key role model in their sporting careers and showing courage, they'll be more likely to follow the example you set.

But it's also down to your players to show courage and commitment in giving their all for the team, and you as a coach must make sure that everyone is aware of what is expected from them. Now we're not saying that your players should be playing on when they are struggling with an injury, but when they're on the pitch and fully fit, they must show the courage to fight for the team.

Having courage will give your team the competitive edge; your players need to show courage to take responsibility for their team role and their behaviour. If they have the courage to not be afraid on and off the pitch, sticking up against what's wrong, as well as maintaining a positive attitude.

Help develop your player's courage and not only will they have success on the pitch, you'll also be helping them grow into a successful person off it!
