What are the main coaching points when introducing the drift defence? I'm talking mainly about senior players.

The main thing to emphasise is communication between the defenders. The defenders should constantly call to each other so that there is no danger of an attacker being able to cut back inside.

Drift defence also needs good communication and understanding between forwards and backs.

There are some good practises in our "Drill" section under "Defensive Patterns"

Try to make sure that defenders use each others name when calling i.e. Jon push one left rather than just push left, I have found that players who are concentrating on defence and looking for the tackle dont register a general call make it personal to get their attention

3 simple key points which should be used for all defence systems.

  1. line speed
  2. line shape (alignment)
  3. COMMUNICATION
