I have a GS in my under 11 accosiation team, meaning she has been chosen out of many girls to play in this team. She just looks like she is off with the fairies every game, doesnt pay attention at all. My two main issues is she doesnt lead forward and when defenders get rebounds she doesnt turn into a defender instead she just stays back at post. I have tried getting her out in GA for a run to help with her leading but its even worse. I have tried explaining to her and showing her even getting her to watch the older girls. Nothing seems to work. An official told me try her in WA to get her leading downpacked but my mid court players are amazing. I dont know what to do! Help please
Perhaps your GS has been chosen for her shooting skills or height without due regard to other basic skill set that players should have. Perhaps she is feeling out of her depth or has attitude problems which may need a one on one discussion and/or involvement of a parent. In my experience rep teams don't always have the best players being dependent on who tries out for the teams and their positional experiences. There is no guarantee that each team will be a successful combination and it is more about putting players in positions that best suit the whole team goals rather than the best combination in each area (e.g. the suggested run at WA may be worth a try). Junior assoc teams are no different to club comp teams as far as coaching goes with working on the skills that need developing, encouraging participation and confidence in all players and applying disciplinary measures when appropriate.
Hi Zoe, we put this question out on our Facebook page and received a humourous response from one coach who said "bench them until they do pay attention!"
I agree! if you've run drills, worked one on one with her and she has still not adapted her play then bench her. I'm an association coach too and if our girls don't/or are unable to adapt their play then we give others a go who are prepared to try.

Yeah that is true, we go back wednesday from the holiday break so if 1stQ she still isnt addapting i might just bench her and get her to watch the shooters and how much better they work the circle. thanks guys
my daughter was in a rep team, and she was more chosen because of her attitude than her current skill set (she was teh weakest team member). she was rarely played in the beginning but she worked her butt off and eventually was played more often than not, and her skills did improve dramatically. it depends on the players attitude. id talk to her (and her parents), and find out more about her. it may be that she was chosen for height and that she can shoot, so you might have to put a lot of work into her to improve the rest of her skills. you will also have to explain to both her and her parents that, because this is a rep team, then until she has improved, then there is a good chance that she prob wont play much. she has been given an opporunity to learn, the question is, does she want to?
